KRH3@TheRaces

The KRH3@TheRaces was a galloping success as the Hashers had hot tips on the winners of 6 out of 8 races. Late Cummer actually came early to get insider information and to bet on the favourite for the first race. Hasher Nirupama No. 10 whose horse Blue Chip was in the first race, was there with a Steward in one of the member’s boxes and has promised to reserve us a box for the coming races on 25th December and 1st January if we let her know that we want to spend another day at the races. Bean Town, Sarah, Fiddler and family from Jaipur, Afroze, Manish, Sexy Legs, Madhuri, and newcomers Mita, Simon and Sajid arrived at different times but were in top betting form. Bean Town Billie managed to get past the gate despite his Bermudas and sandals as we assured the gate-keeper we knew all the Stewards. At the end of the day Bill did have a VIP’s visiting card so we’ll be well looked after when we go back again.

I walked the most as I set a trail between the main gate -as I had everyone’s passes - the boxes, the betting windows, and the food stalls leaving behind for everyone the names of the favourites to win. The pack stayed together in the Sookias’ member’s box having beers, tea and coffee while ticking off winners in the little racing books.

We all placed our bets and spent our winnings at the Food fiesta on the lawns. We sampled the number one specialties: Kewpie’s – Prawn Cutlets, Tangerine – Chicken Suimai, Twinkle Fung Shuey – Chicken Satay, Taaza – Pasta, Veda -Murgh Husnoo Kebab, and Just Desserts – pavlova, brownies and chocolate mousse… So the money made at the races was well spent.

Hashers made money on Anzello, Exclusive Affair, One for Me, Retained Asset, Allodium pronounced Aloo Dum by most race goers, and Allarico. The 7th Race was wide open with about 10 horses running and I had my hopes on a Thrilling Proposal, a real long shot and a complete let down. Winning horse no 6, a total outsider named Anokato, cut the rest of the horses out of the running even though he didn’t figure in the odds on the board. My father, a regular at the races, had Rs.100 on the horse and it paid Rs.8000. Unfortunately Rs.2500 was immediately deducted as Tax. If he’d had the number in his jackpot combination of winners in the last 5 races, he would have made Rs.40 grand. You can bet I’ll figure out how to bet on a Tanala, Quinella, Treble and Jackpot the next time round so we don’t bet our Rs.50 on the favourite to make a Rs.5 profit. RA Bill tipped me the Rs.5 in small change for my tips. However it must be said, that at this last hash of the year, most hashers walked away happy and prosperous.
So here’s wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year 2005.
On, on,
Late Cummer Neela
